Recruiting Class Ranked No. 22

Sept. 21, 2009

TUCSON, Ariz. – The 2009-10 Florida State baseball recruiting class, which features 15 newcomers for the upcoming season, is ranked 22nd nationally as announced by Collegiate Baseball. This marks the 26th consecutive year that Collegiate Baseball has evaluated recruiting classes in Division I.

This year’s class features 11 freshmen and four transfer students. Among the transfers are OF/LHP Tye Buckley (Seminole Community College), RHP Daniel Bennett (Tallahassee Community College), OF Andrew Durden (Indian River Community College) and LHP Robby Scott (Broward Community College).

Of the 11 incoming freshmen, three were selected in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft but opted to postpone their major league career and begin college life as Seminoles this fall.
Infielder Jayce Boyd (Tate HS; Cantonment, Fla.) was the highest freshman draftee selected in the 19th round by the Texas Rangers. Right handed pitcher Robert Benincasa (Armwood HS; Tampa, Fla.) was picked by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 33rd round, while infielder Justin Gonzalez (Columbus HS; Miami, Fla.) was selected in the 46th round by the Houston Astros. Junior college transfer Andrew Durden was drafted in the 2008 MLB First Year Player Draft by Toronto in the 42nd round.

The 2009-10 class consists of nine pitchers including three left handers, four infielders, one outfielder and two catchers.

“We feel like we met all of our needs,” said head coach Mike Martin on this year’s recruiting class. “We are very anxious to see these young men progress throughout the fall season. There is no question that there are some young men that are ready to make immediate contributions as either a starter or a platoon player. But we are definitely looking to improve upon last year.”
