Relays Dominate Southern Sectional

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.  –  Current, former and future members of the Florida State swimming teams were in action this past weekend at the 2017 Southern Zone South Sectional at the YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando, Fla with most representing Club Seminole.

“The kids swam really well,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “Most of them are focused on meets later this summer, so it was great to see such fast swims at this point in their training.”

Highlighting the meet individually were sophomore Nika Blank and senior Chad Mylin, who both won the 50 free with times of 25.76 and 22.83 respectively.

The Noles dominated relays, taking home six total titles. The women won the 200 medley (1:53.96) and 200 free (1:45.73), while the men captured three victories, including the 200 free (1:32.70) as well as the 200 (1:42.88) and 400 (3:47.17) medleys. Club Nole finally brought home the win in the mixed 200 free relay (1:39.60)

In addition to Blank and Mylin’s victories, the Seminoles had 26 races that scored points within the top eight.

Just off her fourth place showing in the 50 breast at the U.S. National Championships, senior Natalie Pierce placed second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:10.62, finishing behind four-time Olympian Alia Atkinson (1:07.61). Redshirt junior McKenna Harris followed in seventh with a mark of 1:14.31.

Junior Lelia Johnston earned second swims in the 50 free, 100 free, 50 fly and 100 fly, grabbing bronze in the 50 fly with a time of 27.55. Her classmate, Fabiana Ingram represented Lake Lytal Lightning and also placed third in the 50 back at 30.27.

Junior William Pisani also competed in three championship heats, winning silver in the 50 fly with a time of 24.44 and added a fourth place showing in the 100 fly, clocking 55.60.  Pisani joined Mylin in the top heat of the 50 free, placing fifth at 23.29.

Senior Jacob Urbano finished eighth in the 50 fly (25.82) and junior John Vann was fourth in the 100 free with a time of 52.20.

Six members of the 2017 signing class were also in action. Rising freshmen Kathryn Petrone and Hailey Ladd represented Club Seminole, while Bella English (Trinity Prep Aquatics), Adrian Moya (Metro Aquatics), Paxton Rhoads (Tampa Bay Aquatics) and Madison Tyle (Sarasota YMCA) competed for other club teams from Florida.

Former Seminoles Jared Pike (Unattached), Marc Rojas (South Florida Aquatics) and Juan Sequera dominated the breaststroke races. Pike bested Sequera and Rojas in both the 50 and 100 distances, winning the 50 at 28.66 while Sequera placed second at 28.78.  Rojas followed in fourth (29.41) and Rhoads was fifth (29.81).

In the 100, Pike placed second by four one-hundredths of a second over Sequera touching at 1:03.05. Rhoads followed in fourth with a time of 1:05.55.

Sequera was victorious in the 200 at 2:17.13 and Rojas was the runner up at 2:22.70.

With 21 total swimmers, Club Seminole finished seventh overall with a combined total of 1,172 points. The women scored a tally of 545 for seventh and the men placed sixth at 563.
