Rookies on to NCAAs

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Two members of the Florida State women’s swimming and diving team have earned an invitation to compete at the 2016 NCAA Championships, which will be held March 17-19 in Atlanta, Ga.

“We battled at lot of adversity this season,” FSU head coach Frank Bradley said. “We had some major injuries and sickness throughout the year, but we’re moving on to NCAA’s and our two ladies that have been selected are not just satisfied with making the meet, they want to go and score points and make a statement.”

Earning her spot by ways of posting a 4:09.82 in the 400 IM back at the SMU Classic in October, freshman Meg Brown will also compete in the 200 fly and 200 back at the meet.

“We knew that Meg would compete at this level right away,” Bradley said. “She battled some injuries during the season, but she’s overcome that adversity and is ready to go.”

Brown placed 10th in the 400 IM at the ACC Championships with a time of 4:12.42 before taking 17th in the 200 back (1:56.65) and ninth in the 200 fly (1:57.45).

In addition to Brown, her classmate, Summer Finke secured her invitation after she swam a 16:15.04 in the 1650 free at the Bulldog Last Chance Meet on Sunday.

“She was one of those athletes that got to campus in the summer and went straight to work,” Bradley said. “She works very hard and she’s improved since stepping on campus. She really shines in long course, but having her qualify for one of the best meets in the country that is short course just shows how much she’s improved this year. She has great things in store for her.”

Finke took sixth in the 1650 free at the ACC Championships behind a time of 16:17.59 on top of placing 20th in the 500 free with a time of 4:48.36.

Divers Cassidy Gebhart and Blair Mulka will look to qualify for the NCAA Championships at the 2016 Zone B qualifier, which will be held March 7-9 in Atlanta, Ga. The top nine finishers on 1-meter along with the eight highest totals on 3-meter and seven on platform will earn the invitation.
