Athens, Ga. – Freshmen Katie Rybakova and Federica Suess continued to set the bar as high as ever for Florida State women’s tennis this morning with two enormous upsets.
In the “A” draw, Rybakova downed No. 4-seeded Laura Vallverdu of Miami, the No. 14 player in the country. The Coral Springs, Fla. native dominated her in-state competitor in both sets as she won 6-3, 6-1.
Suess topped Stetson’s Breanna Atkinson in the “B” draw. With a 6-0, 6-1 victory she will now advance to the semi-finals as well.
Though the singles consolation rounds were cancelled due to rain this morning, competition will continue this afternoon with both of the main draw singles semi-finals. Rybakova will take on Georgia Tech’s Kristi Miller, the No. 1 seed in the tournament and No. 5 player in the nation.
Doubles quarterfinals begin after singles semi-finals, where Rybakova and sophomore Jessica Wente will play in the “A” draw round of eight while Suess and junior Ania Rynarzewska will try to defend their No. 3 tournament rank in the “B” draw.
