Florida State senior Maria Salinas finished with a second consecutive score of 80 and is in a tie for 121st place in the individual standings after two rounds of the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship on the Legends Course. She begins play in the third round looking to move up in the ranks of the six individual playing in the four-round, 54-hole tournament.
Salinas played her second round similar to her first round with two birdies and eight holes at par. She began the second round on a roll with six consecutive and seven of her first nine holes scored at par. She made the turn after her first nine holes making a steady and swift climb up the leaderboard with a 3 over par score of 39. Salinas was one double bogey and one bogey from making the turn at par for the first nine holes.
Salinas then play strong golf late in the round with two birdies and an even par score over her final four holes. She closed out her day with a birdie on hole No. 9 – the second consecutive round in which she has birdied the final hole on the front nine of the course.
Salinas is competing in her third career NCAA Championship Finals event and looking to finish this appearance as well as she did her second appearance in 2010. She closed that appearance (her first as a Seminole) with scores of 74-72 which helped her finish in 20th place in the individual standings. Salinas was a total of 3 strokes over par for a total of 291 in leading Florida State to a 10th place finish in the team standings.
No. 2 ranked Alabama, the only team in the 24 squad field to finish with an under par team score in the second round, is in first place in the team standings heading into the third round. The Crimson Tide holds and 11 stroke lead over No. 1 ranked UCLA. Brooke Pancake of Alabama is in first place in the individual standings; she holds a two stroke lead of Giulia Molinaro of Arizona State in the race for medalist honors.
Salinas is scheduled to play with Rocio Sanchez Lobato of Georgia and Kelsey Vines of Oklahoma State. The threesome will tee off at 9:28 am EST from the 10th tee.
