Oct. 28, 2011

WILMINGTON, N.C. (seminoles.com) –
Florida State senior Maria Salinas is in a tie for 26th place in the individual standings and the Seminole women’s golf team is in a tie for 12th place in the team standings after the first round of the 10th Annual Landfall Tradition on the Jack Nicklaus Course at the Country Club of Landfall. Salinas is only six strokes out of the lead and only five strokes out of the top three of the individual standings with 36 holes reaming to be played in the three day fall season ending tournament.

No. 3 ranked Auburn, the highest ranked of the 15 top 50 ranked teams in the 18 team field, holds a seven stroke lead over Purdue. The Tigers posted a nine-over-par total on the first 18 holes to create their gap over the Boilermakers. No. 4 North Carolina (306) and Notre Dame (306) are two shots behind the Boilermakers in a tie for third while South Carolina (307) occupies fifth place. Purdue’s Paula Reto sits atop the individual leaderboard after recording the only sub-par score in the first round. She shot a one-under par 71, to hold a one-shot edge over Auburn’s Victoria Trapini who finished with an even par score of 72.

“All of the teams played under really tough conditions today and we didn’t adjust very well,” said head coach Amy Bond. “It was a hard day for everyone but we have to put this round behind us, learn from it and get better. I am confident that we will do that and be a better team because of what we will learn from today.”

Salinas (Lima, Peru) played her best golf late in the round as she closed her day at one under par over the final six holes she played. She totaled one birdie and four scores at par as she looked to gain momentum heading into the second round. Overall, she carded 12 of 18 holes at par or better during her first event since earning a top 30 finish in the season opening Mo Moral Tournament at Texas A&M University.

Salinas will look to celebrate her 21st birthday on Saturday with a score that will vault her near the top of the individual leaderboard.

Freshman Alex Milan (Lutz, Fla.) is in a tie for 32nd place in the individual standings as she shot a six over par 78. Playing in her second career tournament, Milan is within two strokes of moving into the top 15 and five strokes of moving into the top three of the individual standings.

Florida State is paired with Ole Miss and Tulane and will tee off from hole No. 10 at 9:20 a.m. Saturday morning in the second round of play. The Seminoles are looking to earn their third consecutive top five finish after placing in a tie for third at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic and in fifth place at the Mo Morial Tournament to begin the fall season.
