GAINESVILLE, Fla. (seminoles.com) –
Senior Maria Salinas shot a 2 under par 68 and is in a tie for second individual standings and the Florida State women’s golf team is in third place in the team standings after one round of the Lady Gator Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida. The Seminoles finished with the third best team score of the round and are ahead of six teams ranked ahead of them in the national rankings including No. 4 Auburn (fifth place), No. 11 Duke (eighth place), No. 14 Baylor (tied for 10th) and No. 23 Florida (tied for sixth).
Florida State is looking for its first team championship of the year along with its best team finish. The Seminoles finished in a tie for third place in the team standings at the University of Oklahoma tournament during the fall season.
No. 2 ranked Alabama is in first place in the team standings – the Crimson Tide hold a two stroke lead over Georgia and a six stroke lead over Florida State. Alabama has two players in the top five of the team standings and three in the top 10 to lead the team standings. Emilie Burger of Georgia shot a three under par 67 and holds a one shot lead in the individual standings.
Salinas (Lima, Peru) played her best round of golf this spring as she carded a two under par score of 68. She carded three birdies and totaled 16 holes at par or better. She totaled birdie and eight holes at par on her first nine holes and totaled three birdies on her second set of nine holes during the round. Salinas was never above par and was any many as three strokes under par during the round.
“As a team we are getting back on track,” said Salinas. “Everyone is playing well and playing for each other. We have confidence in each other and that confidence seems to be growing with each round.”
Freshman Laure Castelain (Bordeaux, France) is in a tie for 10th place in the individual standings as she carded a 1 over par score of 71. She began her round on fire with two birdies on her first six holes and finished the round with even scores of par of 10 of her final 13 holes. Castelain was as many as two strokes under par and never more than one stroke over par in moving into contention for her first career individual win.
Junior Malin Jansson (Nykvarn, Sweden) played well and is in a tie for 28th place following a first round score of 74 – she finished at four over par. She carded 13 of 18 holes at par or better with one birdie.
“We are off to a good start but have lots of work to finish over the weekend.” Said head coach Amy Bond. We need to cut down on our high total of bogeys. We are close to putting together a round where all five of our girls play well. Maria played well today – the next two days should be a lot of fun. ”
Florida State will tee off on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. and will play with Auburn and Kentucky.
