Salinas Playing For Win

Feb. 14, 2012

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. (seminoles.com) –
Florida State University senior Maria Salinas is in a tie for fourth place in the individual standings after shooting a second round score of 73 and the Seminole women’s golf team is in 10th place in the team standings heading into the final round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at the Palos Verdes Golf Club. Salinas enters the third and final round of play only three strokes out of first place as she plays for her first career individual title.

No. 1 ranked UCLA continued to dominate the 15-team field as the Bruins look to win their fourth tournament championship of the 2011-12 fall and spring seasons. UCLA will take an 18 stroke lead over rival Southern California into Wednesday’s third and final round. Lindy Duncan of Duke shot an even par score of 71 and moved into first place in the individual standings with 18 holes remaining to be played. She leads Erynne Lee of UCLA by one stroke and has a three stroke lead over Salinas of Florida State.

Salinas (Lima, Peru) was even par over her final 15 holes of the round after carding a double bogey on the par four hole No. 3. Over the course of her final 15 holes, Salinas carded 11 holes at par or better with four birdies. If not for a pair of bogeys on her final two holes, Salinas would have finished at even par or better and closer to the individual lead.

“I am excited about tomorrow because I know our team is going to play well,” said Salinas. “We have the potential to move up the team leaderboard. Individually, I am going to do the same things I have been doing in this tournament, play with the momentum that I know my teammates will create and hopefully move up in the individual standings.”

Salinas will look to better the top finish of her career – she has finished as the runner up in to events during her career – at the spring 2009 Lady Mocs Invitational and at the spring 2011 Lady Puerto Rico Classic.

Junior Malin Jansson (Nykvarn, Sweden) carded a 78 in the second round and is in a tie for 26th place in the individual standings. She carded 11 holes at par or better with one birdie and has totaled four birdies in the first 36 holes of the tournament.

Florida State is paired in the third round with Denver and Florida as they work to move up the leaderboard in the final round.
