Tallahassee, Fla.- Florida State senior Sam Chang won two matches on day one of the Seminole Invitational at Scott Speicher Tennis Center to advance to the quarterfinals.

Chang (Young Ming, Taiwan) defeated Central Florida’s John Beigart 6-4, 6-1 in the first round and followed up that victory with a win over Sasha Ermakov 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Chang will play Georgia’s Jamie Hunt Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m.

“Sam (Chang) had a great All-American tournament, and has had a good fall,” said Florida State men’s tennis head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Now he’s having a good tournament here. Hopefully he’ll come through with some more wins and if he wins tomorrow he puts himself in position to play on the last day of the tournament.

Besides Chang, only one other Seminole won an “A” draw match on Friday. Junior Chris Cloer (Brevard, N.C.) defeated South Carolina State’s Ivan Milojevic 6-4, 6-1 in the first round before losing in three sets to Harvard’s Chris Clayton 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in round two. Freshman Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) was upset in round one by Miami’s Vivek Submaranian 6-4, 7-6 and junior Maciek Sykut (Marathon, Fla.) was beaten by Georgia Tech’s Guillermo Diaz 6-4, 6-3.

“Clint got upset, we’re a little disappointed with that,” said Hultquist. “Maciek had a tough draw and lost, but on the other hand some of our `C’ Draw players played well and I think we’ve got a chance to win that part of the draw.

Senior Jason Hood (Columbia, S.C.), junior Ryan Boyajian (Weston, Fla.) and sophomore Michael O’Shea (Boca Raton, Fla.) all won their first round matches in the “C” Draw. Hood defeated FAMU’s Forrest Jenkins 6-0, 6-1, O’Shea eliminated Mercer’s Jarron Bergeron 6-2, 6-4 and Boyajian was victorious over Mercer’s Mathew Davis 6-3, 6-2.

In the “B” draw, junior Drew Bailey (Tallahassee, Fla.) lost to Miami’s J.C. Whitner 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, while redshirt freshman Bobby Deye was defeated by the Hurricanes Hector Nieto 7-6, 1-6, 7-5.
