TALLAHASSE, Fla. – Florida State sand volleyball head coach Danalee Corso announced the 2013 schedule on Thursday. The Seminoles will participate in nine different events, as well as host a fall match against Georgia State on Nov. 3.
The Seminoles will take on the Panthers from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sand Volleyball Complex in a fall showcase event. It will be Georgia State’s ever sand volleyball match.
The Seminoles are expected to be led by All-American captain senior Aurora Newgard and fellow captains and classmates Mallory Kiley and Amanda Saxton. In sand volleyball’s inaugural season last year, Florida State went undefeated in dual match play (15-0) before finishing third at the National Championships.
“We are so excited to have enough girls to compete in the fall against a neighboring school that also has many sand only players,” head coach Danalee Corso said. “We will have 14 sand-only players along with two redshirt freshmen on the indoor volleyball team (Leah Mikesky and Sarah Burrington) to battle against the new GSU program of 12 sand-only players. Our seven new players have exceeded my expectations at this point in the year. They are workhorses and have helped to create an atmosphere of hard work and levity at the same time which is the kind of environment I appreciate because it is what sand volleyball about – a lifestyle sport that is really physically taxing. Our returners are stronger than ever, polished and have a great attitude by helping and welcoming the new girls. We are all just thrilled to be able to compete next week.”
FSU’s regular season slate will begin on March 10 in Los Angeles, Calif., where it will take on USC, Loyola Marymount and Long Beach State over two days.
The Noles will also travel to Chula Vista (Calif.) Olympic Training Center, during their first week of competition to face Grand Canyon University and CSU Bakersfield from March 15-16.
After hosting an intersquad tournament on March 24, the Noles will hit the road from March 29-30 to take on Jacksonville, Stetson, Coastal Carolina and College of Charleston in Jacksonville, Fla. FSU will then stay on the road for a two-day event in Atlanta against GSU, Tulane and ULM from April 6-7 before participating in the Siesta Key Tournament from PAril 12-14.
Florida State’s final home event will be from April 20-21 against GAS, UAC and College of Charleston.
The Seminoles will be looking to make a return trip to the AVCA National Championships, held again this year in Gulf Shores, Ala. from May 3-5.
