GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida State forward Sanna Talonen and North Carolina forward Casey Nogueira have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Co-Players of the Week for their performances in matches played Oct. 16-19.
Talonen, a native of Tampere, Finland, played a key role in the offensive outburst for FSU this past week as the eighth-ranked Seminoles extended their win streak to six games blanking 16th-ranked Wake Forest, 5-0, and defeating ninth-ranked Duke, 5-2. Talonen had a goal and an assist in the win over Wake Forest and her score in the win over Duke gave FSU a two-goal lead in the first half.
Talonen’s performance gave her five points for the week and helped FSU (12-2-1, 6-1) to back-to-back five-goal performances for the first time ever in ACC play. Talonen leads the Seminoles this season with 10 goals and 23 total points. She is now tied for fourth place in career goals on FSU’s all-time list (28) and ranks eighth in career points (65).
The sophomore forward leads the team with four multi-point performances in 2008, while she ranks in the top five in the ACC in points per game (2nd), game-winning goals (t-2nd) and goals per game (3rd).
The weekly honor from the ACC is the first of the season for the Seminoles and the first since August 28, 2006 when Mami Yamaguchi was honored by the league office for her performance in FSU’s upset victory over top ranked Portland.
Florida State is back in action this week as the Seminoles host the Clemson Tigers on Thursday, October 23 at 7:00 p.m., in the final home regular season game of 2008.
