TALLAHASEE, Fla. – Florida State senior captain Sarah Wagenfuhr played a key role in the Seminoles’ first conference victory of the season in earning National Team of the Week accolades from TopDrawerSoccer.com. Wagenfuhr set a season-high with three points on a goal and an assist as FSU defeated Virginia Tech 3-1 last Sunday.
Wagenfuhr broke a 1-1 tie converting on penalty kick in the 61st minute to give the Seminoles the lead for good. The goal was her first of the season and first game-winning goal in 2008. Two of her three career goals have gone as game-winners.
Exactly a minute and 45 seconds later, Wagenfuhr assisted on a goal by Sanna Talonen to give the Seminoles a two-goal advantage. The Colorado Spring, Colo., native sent a beautifully placed ball into the box off a corner where Talonen flicked a header into the back of the net for the goal. Wagenfuhr, who started at center back for the third straight game, was also instrumental in holding the Hokies to just three shots on goal in 90 minutes of action.
Wagenfuhr joins Tiffany McCarty and Talonen as previous Seminoles to earn National Team of the Week accolades in 2008.
Eleventh-ranked Florida State is back in action this week as the Seminoles head up north to face Maryland and Boston College on Thursday and Sunday, respectively.
