Savage Cards 65 To Lead Men’s Golf Team 14th Place Finish At NCAA East Regional Championship

ORLANDO, Fla. –
Florida State freshman Matt Savage carded a career-best seven-under par 65 in the final round of the NCAA East Regional Men’s Golf Championship to finish in the top 50 of the individual standings as play in the event drew to a close late Saturday afternoon. The Seminoles played their best team round of the tournament in the third round and finished in 14th in the team standings as they played in their first regional championship since 1998.

Savage and the Seminoles played their best round of the three-round event on Saturday. They began the day in 19th place and moved themselves up five positions to finish in 14th place. They finished third of the three ACC teams who played in the regional at the Lake Nona Golf and Country Club.

Wake Forest from the ACC wrapped up the regional championship and will be joined by Georgia, Texas Tech, North Carolina, Coastal Carolina, Charlotte, UCLA, Auburn, South Carolina and UNLV in the NCAA Championship in Sunriver, Ore., May 31-June 3. Kevin Chappell of UCLA shot a four-under par 68 in the final round to win the individual championship with a 211 total. He defeated a trio of players – Dustin Johnson of Coastal Carolina, Jarred Texter of UNLV and Taylor Wood of Southern California by one stroke.

Savage made the biggest move of the day for Florida State and on the individual scoreboard as he finished with a seven-under par score of 65 to move from 112th place after the first two rounds into the top 50 in the individual standings. Savage carded six birdies on his final nine holes including three of the last four, to earn his career-best single-round score. He had eight birdies and only one bogie over his final 18 holes.

Freshman Nicholas Smith (Ocala, Fla,) carded a one-under par score of 71 in the final round and finished in tied for 18th in the final standings. Smith finished with a 219 total after carding consecutive scores of 74 in the first and second rounds.

Sophomore Song Jeon (Seoul, Korea) played his best round of the tournament on the final day as he carded a three-over par score of 74. He played nearly error free golf over the final 18 holes with two birdies and 15 holes at par or better. Jeon finished the event with a 236 total for the tournament.
