April 10, 2007

ALPHARETTA, Ga. –
Sophomore Matt Savage carded a two-over par 74 in Tuesday’s second round to move into a tie for 22nd place in the individual standings and begins third and final round play in the U.S. Collegiate Championship only six strokes behind the individual leaders who are at even par through the first two rounds of the event. The Seminoles are in 14th place in the team standings.

The No. 2 ranked Georgia Bulldogs turned in the best team round of the day with a seven-over par 295 to move into first place in the team standings. The Bulldogs are two strokes ahead of No. 12 Clemson as the teams head into the Wednesday’s final round. Tanner Ervin of Clemson and Webb Sampson of Wake Forest are tied for the individual lead – both players have carded even-par score of 144 for the first 36 holes of the event.

Savage (Louisville, Ky) carded a two-over par 74 and has a team-leading 150 total for the first two rounds of the event. He cared five birdies and totaled seven holes of par golf.

Freshman Cameron Knight (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) carded a 76 and improved his second round score by six strokes as compared to his first round total of 82. Sophomore Nicholas Smith (Ocala, Fla.) enjoyed the best improvement of any of the 77 golfers in the event as he turned in a five over par 77 on the second set of 18 holes. He improved his scored by 13 strokes after a tough outing in the first round.

“To say the golf course played tough today is an understatement,” said Head Coach Trey Jones. “When you bring the best players in the country in knowone breaks par and there were only four rounds of even par — you inow that you are playing a tough course. Our guys played their hearts out today and gave me everything they had. I am proud of them for the way they handled themselves. Tomorrow calls for more bad weather and will bring another challenge and opportunity to improve.”
