April 11, 2007

ALPHARETTA, Ga. –
Florida State sophomore Matt Savage finished in a tie for 24th place in the individual standings and the Seminole men’s golf team finished in 15th place as play in the Second Annual U.S. Collegiate Championship on the Lakeside Course at the Golf Club of Georgia came to a close Wednesday. Savage carded a 76 in the final round and finished with three of the Seminoles’ top six individual scores as the Seminoles played their final event before participating in the annual ACC Championship April 20-22.

No. 2 ranked Georgia won the team championship as the Bulldogs outdistanced No. 5 ranked UCLA by eight strokes. The Bulldogs counted three golfers, led by Hudson Swafford in second place, who all finished in the top-16 of the individual standings. Webb Sampson of Wake Forest earned individual medalist honors with a one-under par total of 215.

One of the more high powered events of the men’s collegiate golf season, the U.S. Collegiate played host to seven of the top 10 ranked teams in the current GolfWeek / Sagarin rankings – led by No. 2 Georgia and No. 3 Alabama. The Seminoles entered the event ranked No. 22 in the nation.

Savage (Louisville, Ken.) was the most consistent Seminole during the 54-hole event as he averaged just over 75 strokes per round. He carded a personal best 74 in the second round as he earned his eighth top-25 individual finish in eight tournaments this year. Savage has been the Seminoles’ top finisher in each event this spring.

Seminole freshman Seath Lauer (Huntington, Ind.) carded a two-over par 74 and finished with a three-day total of 234. He finished seven strokes better over the final 18 holes than he did in the second round after shooting an 81. Lauer finished with 14 holes at par or better (including two birdies) and finished at one-under par over his final 12 holes of the third round.

Junior Jonas Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) finished as the Seminoles’ second ranked player with a 230 total for the event. He carded a personal tournament best 73 and was slotted in the top 15 of the individual standings after the first round of the event.
