TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Former FSU women’s tennis player Francesca Segarelli won the doubles bracket at the 10,000 Quintana Roo in Quintana Roo, Mexico. While representing the Dominican Republic, Segarelli teamed up with former USF women’s tennis player Danielle Mills (USA) in order to capture the title at the Grand Palladium Hotel and Resort on Tuesday.
The tournament was scheduled to run from May 27-June 2, however inclement weather caused the dates to change.
In the 16-pair main draw, Segarelli and Mills won four matches en route to the crown, where they first defeated Monserrat Alonso (CHI) and Melina Ferraro (ARG) with ease, 6-2, 6-1 before knocking out Sarahi Garcia Cerrera (MEX) and Ana Luisa Perez Lopez (MEX), 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
Mills and Segarelli moved on to defeat the third-seeded pair of Beatriz Maria Martins Cecato (BRA) and Naomi Totka (HUN) in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-4.
In the finals, the top-seeded pair of Ana Sofia Sanchez (MEX) and Daniela Schippers (GUA) were no match for Segarelli and Mills as they captured the win 6-2, 6-4. For Segarelli, it was her third-career doubles title while playing in a professional event.
Segarelli also took to singles play while at the tournament. She entered in the main draw of singles behind a 6-2, 6-1 win over Mixcoatl Trabulse Garcia (MEX) in the qualifying round.
In the main draw of 32 players, Segarelli picked up three more victories while advancing to the semifinals before losing to third-seeded Gonzalez, 6-4, 6-3.
