Seiffert Leads Men’s Golf

Feb. 11, 2012

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (seminoles.com) –
Florida State University junior Chase Seiffert shot scores of 68 and 71 and is in a tie for third place in the individual standings and the No. 17 ranked Seminole men’s golf team is in a tie for fourth place in the team standings with one round to play in the Gator Invitational on the Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida. Seiffert, who is playing in his first event as a Seminole after transferring to Florida State from Central Alabama Community College during the fall of 2012, carded a two under par score of 68 in his first career Division I round and enters Sunday’s final round only seven strokes out of the individual lead.

The Seminoles have positioned themselves for a strong finish in Sunday’s final round despite playing in difficult weather conditions that included 30 miles per hour wind gusts throughout the two rounds of play.

Auburn, with four golfers in the top 20 of the individual standings, has the lead after two rounds with a five stroke lead over the host school and defending tournament champion Florida. Auburn is led by Dominic Bozzelli who carded scores of 68 and 64 for a two round total of 132. Bozzelli holds a five stroke lead over Florida’s T.J. Vogel and a seven stroke lead over Florida State’s Seifert and Chad Ramey of Mississippi State.

Seiffert (Panama City, Fla.) was on fire in the first round as he carded four birdies and 10 holes at par on his final 14 holes to card his career best score of 68. After starting the round with two bogeys over his first four holes, Seiffert caught fire and quickly moved under par. He was even after seven holes and moved under par after 12 holes. Seiffert birdied his final two holes to move under par and finish with a 68.

The junior college transfer continued his strong play with two birdies on his first seven holes of the second round to move back under par – he made the turn at even par. He finished with one birdie of the final nine holes to finish the day with a 71 and a two round total of 139.

“For Chase to compete in his first tournament and open with an under par day is impressive,” said head coach Trey Jones. “We have known he has the shots to play at a high level and today should give him some deserved confidence.”

Florida State’s Brooks Koepka (Wellington, Fla.), the No. 5 ranked golfer in college golf, finished the first day of play with a two round total of 145. He carded a one over par 71 in the first round and finished the day with a 74. His two round total of 145 has him well positioned to move into the top 10 and even the top five of the individual standings. Koepka is only four strokes out of moving into fifth place in the individual standings.

Sophomore Joaquin Lolas (Lima, Peru) is tie with Koepka for 20th place in the individual standings as he finished the first day with scores of 73 and 72. He carded eagles in both rounds on the same hole. Lolas eagled the par five 12th holes in the first round to move to one under par. That eagle allowed him to finish with a three over par 73 in the first round. His second round eagle on the same hole helped him finish with a two over par score of 72.

“It is not uncommon to see some good and bad on the opening day of the spring season and that is exactly what we had today.” said Jones. “Overall the team competed well in difficult conditions but we have to improve on our execution. We made multiple mistakes from the center of the fairway’s and on par 3’s. This is one of two 36 hole days we will play this season. I am looking forward to seeing how our legs hold up tomorrow.”
Sunday’s final round of 18 holes is scheduled to begin as a shotgun start at 10:00 because of expected frost in the Gainesville area in the early morning hours.
