Seiffert Wins Florida Amateur Match Play Title

Aug. 13, 2012

Florida State senior Chase Seiffert defeated incoming Seminole freshman Hank Lebioda, 4 and 3, to win the individual title at the 22nd Annual Florida State Amateur Match Play Championship at the Country Club of Orlando on Aug. 12. Seiffert celebrated his 21st birthday with a victory over Joe Alfieri, 4 and 3, in the semifinals and his championship clinching win over Lebioda, 4 and 3, in the finals.

Seiffert won six matches in a span of four days (with not one match lasting more than 16 holes) to claim the championship. The Match Play Championship began with an 18-hole round to seed the 64-player field. Single elimination match play followed to determine the Match Play Champion. Seiffert carded a 69 and was tied for seventh in the qualifying round; he was one of only nine players in the 128 player field to card a score in the 60’s during qualifying.

“I went in to the Match Play Championship with a lot of confidence and my eyes focused on completing the Florida sweep,” said Seiffert. “I played solid golf for all seven tournament rounds and grinded out some good wins against some very tough players. I was especially happy with my win over Hank because he played really great golf. Hank is going to be a really strong player for us and I am happy he is going to be my teammate at Florida State this year.”

Seiffert earned one of the highlights of a special summer during his semifinal match as he carded a hole-in-one on the 13th hole. He then birdied hole No. 14 and eagled hole No. 15 to secure his spot in the finals.

Seiffert continued to play well against Lebioda in the championship match as he won the first two holes to take an early lead. Lebioda rallied and squared the match through 10 holes. Seiffert then birded the next five holes to secure the championship as he was ahead by four holes with only three to play.

Seiffert completed his summer as the hottest amateur golfer in the state of Florida as he won his fifth championship of the summer at the Florida Amateur. He also won individual championships at the Sherman Invitational, the Florida Amateur, the Florida Open and the Oglethorpe Invitational.

Seiffert, who earned All-ACC honors in 2012, begins his senior season at Florida State when classes start on Aug. 27. The Seminoles are scheduled to play four matches during the fall season: The Inverness Intercollegiate (Sept. 17-18), the Ping/GolfWeek Preview (Sept. 23-25), the Fighting Illini Invitational (Sept. 30-Oct. 2) and the Cabo Collegiate (Oct. 14-16).
