Tallahassee, FL – The Florida State baseball team concluded its fall practice Friday night with the team’s annual Garnet & Gold game. For the second night in a row, the Gold squad took home the victory winning 5-4 Friday night. The Gold team was led by 2004 freshman All-American Ryne Malone who went 3-for-4 with two RBI, two runs scored, a double and a home run. The Gold pitching staff allowed just one earned run in eight innings on four hits.

“I thought our pitching was very good tonight,” said head coach Mike Martin. “We had a couple of guys make some freshman mistakes that you come to expect after just three weeks. There is certainly an awful lot of work to do. I can honestly say I never remember us being this young since I have been here. This year we are looking at a minimum of four freshmen in the starting line-up.”

Of the 16 field players that played in the two scrimmages, eight were freshmen and five were sophomores. That youth led to some adventures defensively as FSU committed 10 errors in the two scrimmages.

“We just need to play more consistent defensively,” said Martin. “That has got to be our mindset as we head towards the season.”

Martin singled out freshman Tony Thomas and sophomore Bryan Henry as a couple of the young players that stood out the last two nights. Thomas, playing at second both nights, was the star of Thursday night’s game when he recorded a double, triple and home run off the veteran pitchers. While he did not record a hit in two at bats Friday, Thomas continued to show off his skills in the infield especially on a first inning stab where the freshman ranged to his right and picked off a ball heading through the hole and threw the runner out at first.

Henry, a product of North Florida Christian in Tallahassee, played at third both nights and came in to pitch the final two innings of Friday night’s scrimmage. The right-hander went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and pitched two innings of no hit ball where he walked two and struck out two.

“I was very pleased with Tony Thomas both nights defensively and at the plate last night,” said Martin. “He had three hits Thursday and did everything in that game. I think Bryan Henry has been impressive at third as well.”

Pitching coach Jamey Shouppe pitched solely veterans Thursday night and turned the reins over to his young pitchers Friday evening. Of the eight pitchers who took the hill Friday, four were freshmen, two were sophomores and two were juniors. Each pitcher threw two innings and seven of the eight hurlers allowed either one or no earned runs in their limited action.

“It is great for the guys to get the feel for a normal game under the lights at Dick Howser Stadium,” said Shouppe. “It is learning experience. You get to see how these players react under certain situations and when the lights come on. It is just a lot of fun but at the same time you learn about some of the guys.”

D.J. Echols, Bryan Henry and Barrett Browning each led the team with two K’s on the night. Sophomore Michael Hyde from Tallahassee was perfect in his two innings as he faced just six batters and struck out one while issuing no walks. Hyde threw just 20 pitches in his two innings of work.

The next time the Seminoles return to the field will be Opening Day versus Charleston Southern, January 28, 2005. Friday’s game will begin at 3:30 p.m. The 20th annual Seminole Baseball Leadoff Dinner is scheduled for Saturday, January 29 following game two of the Charleston Southern series. Season ticket holders should also be on the lookout for their 2005 renewal forms, which will go out in the mail the first week of December.
