Another BCS Bowl appearance, the 2003 Soccer College Cup, the 2004 Softball College World Series … it was indeed a good year for the Seminoles and over the summer months, Florida State fans will have the opportunity to relive some of those recent memories with the “Seminole Dispatch 2003-04 Year in Review.” Each week, until competition resumes, the Seminole Dispatch will rerun stories about some of Florida State’s greatest moments throughout the past year.

Jessica van der Linden is the first player ever to win the Honda Award and the USA Softball National Player of the Year award.

Jessica van der Linden Named Honda Award Winner For Softball

The dream season for Seminole softball player Jessica van der Linden continued on Monday when the most decorated female athlete ever at Florida State University was named the Honda Award winner for softball. This is the second national player of the year honor for the senior and she is now the only player ever to win both the Honda Award and USA Softball National Player of the Year award. This the 28th year that The Honda Award has been presented by the Board of Directors of The Collegiate Women’s Sports Awards and van der Linden now joins 11 other female athletes who have qualified for the Honda-Broderick Cup, which is awarded to the nation’s Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year.

Mat Cloer is only the third men’s tennis player in the history of the ACC to win multiple Player of the Year honors.

Mat Cloer Repeats as Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year

This season Mat Cloer’s name became synonymous with the best players in the history of Florida State University men’s tennis. Now he’s adding his name to an elite list of illustrious players in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The junior became just the third player in conference history to repeat with the league’s top award as he was named ACC Player of the Year on Thursday (April 15).

Manning and Dutton Earn All-America Status; FSU Finishes 17th at NCAA Championships – Seminoles have best improve in the nation from 2003 meet.

Four Seminoles Selected to the 2003 Track and Field All-American List – Rafeeq Curry, Natalie Hughes, Willie Johnson and Kim Jones were selected to the 2003 NCAA Outdoor All-American list after outstanding seasons.

Three Seminoles Named Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Americans – Jessica van der Linden first-ever back-to-back first team selection in FSU history.

Seminole Relay Adds to All-America Honors with Third Place Finish – The Florida State men’s track and field squad added another All-America addition to the squad.

FSU Baseball’s Ryne Malone and Brian Schultz earn Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American honors. – The Seminoles were two of only three ACC freshmen selected to the All-America list.

FSU’s Eddy Martinez-Esteve and Stephen Drew Earn All-America Honors – Martinez-Esteve was named a first team Collegiate Baseball All-American.

Men’s And Women’s Cross Country Teams Cited For Sportsmanship Award – FSU teams head the list of Sportsmanship Award winners announced by the ACC.

Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Earns ACC Sportsmanship Awards – Florida State leads all schools with four awards this season.

Gill Named Athlete of the Year by NCAA South Region – Senior Vicky Gill won NCAA South Region Athlete of the Year for the 2003 season after finishing first in the race held November 15, 2003.

Florida State Volleyball’s Cassie McLaughlin Earns East Region Freshman of the Year Honors – McLaughlin is the first volleyball player in Florida State history to earn Region Freshman of the Year honors.


07/06/2004 – Men’s Basketball
Seminoles’ Johnson Named To All-ACC Freshman Men’s Basketball Team – Johnson ranked second on team in scoring and among rebounding leaders.


07/06/2004 – Women’s Basketball
Allen And Williams Earn All-ACC Honors – Shante Williams garnered honorable mention All-ACC honors and was named to the five-player All-Freshman Team.

Three More Seminole Soccer Players Garner Postseason Honors – Rowland, Schnugg and Trotter all invited to U-19 National Team Camp.
