Indianapolis, Ind. – Rising sophomore Dan Frebel (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and incoming freshman Aleia Monden (Mililani, Hawaii) recently competed at the 2006 Kaiser Permanente Senior Diving Championship which was held August 2-5.
Frebel finished 10th in the finals of the platform with a six dive score of 314.40. He qualified for the finals after placing fifth with a six dive score of 377.10 in the semifinals and placing seventh with a six dive score of 327.90 in the preliminaries.
“It is amazing how quickly Dan has developed in the platform event,” said head coach Patrick Jeffery. “He had not done any platform diving what so ever until he got here in September. Over the course of the last year he has learned a senior level platform list and not just to be able to dive in the meet but his degree of difficult is right up there with the best of them and he can compete with the best of them. He has only been in four platform competitions and has been as high as fifth in the country and I think he is only going to get better. His score in the qualifying meet would have gotten him second in the prelims of the NCAA Championships and third in the finals.”
Monden finished 11th in the finals of the platform with a five dive score of 233.00. In the semifinals she placed 12th with a five dive score of 233.05 and in the preliminaries she finished 14th with a five dive score of 218.40.
“Over the summer Aleia has really developed her 10m platform,” said Jeffery. “She has a lot potential and good basic skills. She has not been exposed to a lot of mainland U.S. diving because she did most of her diving in Hawaii and it is a big expense to come to the mainland and compete at a national level competition. Brittany (Lerew) could not represent us this year so we had a vacancy and it was nice to find Aleia to compete for us.”
