Seminole Golfers Sordel, Quinney And Zimmer Complete Play At Public Links Tournament

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
Florida State University golfers Carrie Sordel and Katie Quinney and former Seminole Alison Zimmer competed in the 27th U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship at the Ocean Hammock Golf Club in Palm Coast, Fla., July 17-22. Zimmer qualified for match play after finishing in a tie for 45th place after two rounds of stoke play while tournament play for Quinney and Sordel unfortunately ended at the conclusion of stroke play.


Quinney scored a 76 and 82 in the first rounds of stroke play, finishing +14 and tied for 62nd place. Sordel, who finished tied at 69th, scored an 85 and 74, for a +15 total. Both failed to qualify for the first round of match play by not placing among the top 64 golfers in the event.



Quinney and Sordel, both rising seniors for the Seminoles, both competed in the NCAA Regional and Championship tournaments last season as juniors. Quinney fired her career-best single-round score of 70 in the second round of the Bryan National Collegiate, finished seventh at the Ryder/Florida Championship in 2002 and recorded her career-best three-round tournament score of 227 at the NCAA East Regional. Sordel has three top-25 ACC Championship finishes, earned her career-best individual finish of third at the 2003 Ryder/Florida Championship and carded a 71 in the first round of the 2003 Lady Gator Invitational.


While at Florida State, Zimmer helped to lead the Seminoles into the NCAA Regional competition twice, competed in two ACC Championship events and earned a pair of top-25 conference finishes. Zimmer earned varsity letters as a member of the Florida State women’s golf team from 1999-2002.


Zimmer qualified for match play by scoring a 76 and 79 in the first two rounds of stroke play, and ended with a two round score of 155 (+11). She finished stroke play tied at 45th place. Zimmer advanced to the match play and won her first round of match play with a victory over Catherine Williamson. She finished 1-up on Williamson to advance to the second round, where she fell to 12th-seeded Beth Allen, 6 and 5. Allen advanced to the semifinals before falling to Duke’s Virada Nirapathpongporn. Nirapathpongporn eventually lost to 13-year old Michelle Wie in the championship final.
