Seminole Men’s Golf In Ninth Place At Mason Rudolph Championship

Sept. 22, 2003

The Florida State men’s golf team fired a 293 team total in the first round and are in ninth place heading into Tuesday’s second and final round of the Mason Rudolph Championship at the Country Club of Tennessee. The Seminoles were led by a trio of players – Gonzalo Ibarraran, Tim Vickers and Rusty Mosley – who all carded first round scores of 73 and are all grouped together in a tie for 27th place in the individual standings.

Only one round and 18 holes out of a scheduled two rounds and 36 holes were played Monday after heavy rain forced the beginning of the event to pushed back by nearly four hours. Because of the inclement weather, the event has been shortened to 36 total holes with the final round starting at 8 a.m. (CT) Tuesday.

Ibarraran (Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico), who is competing in only his fifth career event tied his career low with his two-over par 73 score. The sophomore shot a pair of 73’s during he fall 2002 season including one at this same event a year ago. Ibarraran cut eight strokes from his 81.00 strokes per round average at the Seminoles’ first tournament of the fall two weeks ago.

Vickers (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Mosley (Vidalia, Ga.) also carded scores of 73 in helping the Seminoles to their strong first round finish. For the senior Vickers it marked the seventh time during his career he had shot 73 or better for a single round. Mosley, a junior, carded his second consecutive round of 73 and his 18th score of 73 or better in 54 career rounds. Junior Matt Adcock (Apopka, Fla.) carded a three-over par 74 while junior Mark Sestilio (Punta Gorda, Fla.) earned a 76.

“Without any of our players having a low round, we kept ourselves in contention for a good finish tomorrow,” said Seminole head coach Trey Jones. “We should feel good about ourselves heading into the second round and I look forward to us playing even better than we did today.”

Alabama-Birmingham’s Garrett Osborn shot a five-under par 66 and teammate Chris Cousins fired a 67 as UAB took a commanding 15 shot lead after the first. The Blazers were 15-under par as a team.

The tournament concludes Tuesday with a shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m.
