TOLEDO, Ohio –
Junior Tommy Rymer is tied for 16th in the individual standings and the Florida State men’s golf team is in 11th place in the team standings after the first two rounds of the Inverness Intercollegiate at the Inverness Club of Toledo. Rymer shot an even-par 71 and was tied for second in the individual standings after the first round and is on track to earn the second top-20 individual finish of his career as the third round of the event begins Tuesday morning.
The event is the season-opener for the Seminoles who finished in 14th place at the 2006 NCAA East Regional Championship to cap off last season.
Texas Christian holds the team lead after the first two rounds and has an eight stroke lead over Southern California and Coastal Carolina. The Horned Frogs have led the event in both rounds after opening with a 295 team total in the first round and finishing with a 299 in the second round. Jon McLean of TCU is the individual leader entering the final round after carding a two-round total of one-under par 141.
“This is the most difficult course I have had a team play on since I’ve been a college coach,” said Head Coach Trey Jones. “This is the kind of course and the type of conditions we need to learn to adapt to for us to continue to improve as a team. I’m looking forward to the final round to see how I can help our players improve their play and finish the tournament on a high note.”
Rymer (Hastings, Minn.) played his best golf of the day in the first round as he carded a near career low 71. He finished with 10 holes at par or better and counted four bogies with the same amount of birdies over the course of the 18 holes. Rymer is looking to improve on his career best finish of tied for 15th at the fall 2006 Lexus/Naples Intercollegiate. Rymer’s best career score of 67 came in the third round of the fall 2006 Lexus/Naples Intercollegiate.
Sophomore Matt Savage (Louisville, Ky.) played well and is tied for 26th in the individual standings. After shooting a 79 in the first round, Savage played well in the afternoon and carded a four-over par score of 75. Savage will look for continuous improvement, has hopes of moving up in the standings and earning the fifth top-25 individual finish of his 12-match collegiate career.
The final round of the event begins with tee times starting at 8 p.m. Tuesday morning.
