Sept. 13, 2005

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. –
The Florida State men’s golf finished third in the team standings and were led by freshmen Matt Savage and Nicholas Smith who finished tied for 18th in the individual standings as play in the 18th Annual Tennessee Tournament of Champions came to a close at the Holston Hills Country Club. Florida State’s team finish marked its best since a third place finish at the 2001 Cavalier Classic and best under third-year head coach Trey Jones.

Tennessee won the team championship as it set numerous tournament records on its way to a 32-stroke win in the team standings. The host Volunteers set tournament records for low single round and low tournament scores. Tennessee golfers Lloyd Campbell and Philip Pettitt tied for top honors individually with both players scoring a 12-under-par 201. Alabama Finished second and the Seminoles finished as the highest ranking of the three ACC teams in the event.

Savage (Louisville, Ky.) played well throughout the event and finished with a one-over par total of 214 in his first career tournament. After carding a one-under par 70 in the first round, he closed the event with a pair of 72’s on the way his first career top-20 finish. Smith, who carded a three-under par 68 in the first round, also finished with a 214 total after playing the first two rounds at three under par.

Sophomore Jonas Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) finished tied for 22nd in the individual standings as he carded a one-under par 70 in the third and final round. He was one under par for the final two rounds of the event after shooting an opening round 215. Junior Torstein Naevestad (Oslo, Norway) shot the low round of the third round of the Seminoles – a career-low tying 68 — and earned the 12th top 25 finish of his career. He finished in 25th place in the individual standings. Sophomore Song Jeon (Seoul, South Korea) shot a 72 in the third round and finished tied for 44th in the individual standings with a 220 total for the 54-hole event.
