Seminole Men’s Golf Team Finishes In A Tie For Fourth Place At Hackler Invitational

The Florida State men’s golf team earned its third top-five team finish of the spring season as it finished in a tie for fourth place at the General Jim Hackler Invitational at the TPC of Myrtle Beach. The Seminoles finished only one stroke out of third place and only 11 strokes from earning a second place finish. The Seminoles were led by freshman Nicholas Smith who earned the second top 15 finish of his career as he finished with a three-over par total of 219 for the three-round event.

East Tennessee State led the tournament from wire to wire to earn the team championship. The Buccaneers outdistanced second place Coastal Carolina by 10 strokes and third place Pepperdine by 20 strokes. Alex Coe of Pepperdine shot a two-under par 69 in the final round and finished with a six-under par total of 210. Coe defeated Rhys Davies of East Tennessee State by only one stroke.

Smith (Ocala, Fla.) achieved the third lowest tournament score in his six-match Seminole career with a 219 total. He carded one-under par scores of 71 in the first and second rounds and finished the event with a 77. Smith’s career-best tournament score of 214 came at the Tennessee Tournament of Champions during the fall of 2005 in his first career event.

Sophomore Jonas Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) finished as the second ranking Seminole with a 225 total over the 54-hole event. He carded the team’s lowest single-round score of the event with a two-under par 70 in the first round. In finishing in a tie for 29th place, he earned the sixth top 30 finish of the fall and spring seasons for the Seminoles. In addition, five of his six rounds during the spring season have been carded at 75 or below.

Freshman Matt Savage (Louisville, Ky.) led the Seminoles in the third round with a one-over par score of 73. The 73 was his best score of the event after he carded a 76 in the first round and a 77 in the second round.

The Seminoles continue their spring schedule as the travel to play at the Hootie at Bulls Intercollegiate in Charleston, S.C. on March 26-28.
