April 15, 2005

NEW LONDON, N.C. –
Florida State senior Rusty Mosley carded an even par 72 and is in sixth place in the individual standings and the Seminole men’s golf team is in third place in the team standings after the first round of the 52nd annual Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf Tournament at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point. Mosley is only three strokes off the individual lead while the Seminoles are only five strokes in back of Duke.

No. 9 ranked Duke, led by Ryan Blaum, is the team leader after the first round. The Blue Devils moved past Georgia Tech at the end of the round and lead the Yellow Jackets by one stroke. The No. 3 ranked Yellow Jackets are led by Roberto Castro who is in a tie for third place with a one-under par score of 71 after the first 18 holes. A total of four of Georgia Tech’s five players finished the first round with scores of 74 or better and are tied for 12th place or better in the individual standings. Duke’s Blaum leads Virginia’s Brad Tilley by two strokes in the chase for medalist honors.

Mosley (Vidalia, Ga.) led the Seminoles as he played his second consecutive even par round over the last two events. He shot an even-par 72 in the second round of last week’s rain shortened Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate in Holly Springs, N.C. Mosley finished the first round of this event as one of only six golfers in the field of 50 with a score of even par or better. He is playing in his fourth career ACC Championship and has begun his final appearance better than any of his first three. He began his previous three conference championship appearances with scores of 77, 79 and 75.

The Seminoles’ freshmen pair of Jonas Blixt (Nassjo, Sweden) and Song Jeon (Seoul, Korea) continued to play well and carded identical scores of 74. The two are in a tie for 12th place in the individual standings. Blixt has finished as the Seminoles’ overall leader in three of five tournaments this spring while Jeon earned his career-best finish of tied for fifth at the Gator Invitational in February.

Sophomore Bradley Ruch (Louisville, Ky.) is in a tie for 26th place after firing a five-over par score of 77. He has played well this season in three tournaments and averages a near-team leading 74.28 strokes in seven rounds. Sophomore Torstein Nevestad (Oslo, Norway), who is playing in his first career ACC Tournament, is in a tie for 26th place after an opening round 77.

With its third place standing after the first round, Florida State ahead of No. 14 Wake Forest, No. 27 Clemson and No. 37 North Carolina.
