Oct. 15, 2005

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. –
Seminole freshman Nicholas Smith is tied for fourth and within two strokes of the individual lead and the Florida State men’s golf team is in third place in the team standings after the first round of the Bank of Tennessee at the Ridges Intercollegiate at the Ridges Golf and Country Club. Smith, who is playing in only his third collegiate event, led the field of 78 for the majority of the first round and has put himself in an early position to earn the first individual victory of his young collegiate career.

Texas Christian, ranked 52nd in this weeks GolfWeek Magazine national poll, holds the team after the first 18 holes as they turned in a seven-under par team score of 281. South Carolina is five strokes behind the Horned Frogs with the Seminoles only nine strokes behind the leaders. Rhys Davis of East Tennessee State University, the host school, carded a four-under par 68 in the first round and was the individual leader after 18 holes.

Smith (Belleview, Fla.) carded the second sub-par round in his first seven collegiate rounds with a two-under par score of 70 in the first round. He was enjoying a masterful round and had spent the round among the individual leaders until the final three holes of the round. After playing his first 15 holes at five-under par, he played his final three holes at three-over par. Smith’s career low of 68 came in the first round of the Tennessee Tournament of Champions in September.

Sophomore Jonas Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) and junior Bradley Ruch (Louisville, Ky.) are both in the top 25 of the individual standings as they carded scores of 72 and 73 respectively. Blixt carded his even-par score of 72 to find himself in a tie for 16th place. He has now carded a team-best six rounds of par or better scores in the first four tournaments of the fall season. Ruch was in a tie for 24th place with a one-over par score of 73; he finished in a tie for 27th place at least week’s Gary Koch Intercollegiate.

Junior Torstein Nevestad (Oslo, Norway), who shot a three-over par 75 in the first round, and freshman Matt Savage (Louisville, Ky.), who shot a five-over par 77, are also competing for Florida State in their final event of the fall season. The Seminoles have earned three top-10 team finishes in their first three events of the season.
