Seminole Men’s Golf Team In 3rd Place At Gator Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla. –
Florida State freshman Nicholas Smith is in a tie for sixth place in the individual standings and has led the Seminole men’s golf team to a third place standing after the first two rounds of the Gator Invitational at the University of Florida Golf Course. Smith led the Seminoles with a two-over par 142 total; he carded an even par 70 in the second round.

Florida, the defending tournament champion, leads the team standings after the first two days with a total of 562. The Gators lead Tulsa by 11 strokes and the Seminoles by 15 strokes. Brett Stegmaier leads the Gators and is in first place in the individual standings after carding a 65 in the first round and a 69 in the second round for a 134 total. He leads Nicolas Geyger of Tulsa by five strokes heading into the final round of play. The first two rounds and 36 holes of the 54-hole event were played on Saturday. The event will conclude with a third round of 18 holes Sunday.

Smith (Ocala, Fla.) carded a 72 in the first round and closed the afternoon with an even par score of 70. Smith finished fifth on the team with an average of 73.78 strokes in nine rounds. He carded his career-low round of 68 in the first round of the Tennessee Tournament of Champions – the first round of his collegiate career. Smith is only eight strokes behind Stegmaier in the individual standings.

Junior Torstein Nevestad (Oslo, Norway) is in a tie for 11th place in the individual standings with a three-over par total of 143. He carded a two-over par 72 in the first round and added a one-over par total of 71 in the second round.

Sophomore Tommy Rymer (Hastings, Minn.) and junior Bradley Ruch (Louisville, Ky.) are in a tie for 21st in the individual standings. Rymer, who was added to the starting lineup Saturday morning to replace Jonas Blixt, carded identical scores of 73 and finished the first 36-holes with a 146 total. Ruch carded a two-over par 72 in the second round. Freshman Matt Savage (Louisville, Ky.) is in a tie for 63rd place in the individual standings with a two-round total of 155.

Blixt withdrew from the event Saturday morning because of a back injury suffered during conditioning earlier this week.
