WALLACE, N.C. –
The No. 8 ranked Florida State University men’s golf team is tied for first place in the individual standings and senior All-America Jonas Blixt is in a tie for third place in the individual standings after the first round of the River Landing Intercollegiate on the Landing Course at the River City Golf Club. The Seminoles are tied with Duke in the team standings while Blixt is one stroke behind Wake Forest’s Webb Sampson and North Carolina’s Kevin O’Connell in the individual standings with two rounds and 36 holes remaining to be played.
“We didn’t come out with a lot of focus after the start of the round was pushed back 90 minutes because of fog this morning,” said Head Coach Trey Jones. “But I liked the way we played after the turn and the way our younger guys finished the round. If we want to win a quality tournament like this we have to stay focused for an entire round. If we learned anything from this round, I hope that will be it. We can’t lose focus like that and expect to win this event and do well in any events in the postseason”
Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) led the Seminoles in the first round with a four-under par score of 68. He was as many as five strokes under par before bogeying his final hole to finish at four-under par. He earned six birdies, 10 holes of par and only two bogeys during the round. Blixt birdied his first hole and his last hole but was six under par on the middle 16 holes. Blixt has now carded two consecutive rounds and finished seven rounds this year with sub-70 scores.
Freshman Drew Kittleson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) also finished under par with a one-under par score of 71. He is in a tie for ninth place in the individual standings. After carding a double-bogey and going two-over par on his first hole, the first-year player carded three birdies and an eagle during the remainder of his round to finish under par for the round. After an eagle three on the par five 17th holes, he played the last 11 holes of the round at under par. Kittleson came within two strokes of tying his career-low single round score of 68.
Sophomore Seath Lauer (Huntington, Ind) was the third member of the team who finished at even par or better as he carded an even par 72 over the first 18 holes. He was two-under with four birdies on his back nine after finishing at two under with two bogeys on his front nine. Lauer carded four birdies, four bogeys and 10 rounds of par during the round. He is in a tie for 14th place in the individual standings.
Sophomore Cameron Knight (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and senior Tommy Rymer (Hastings, Minn.) carded scores of 73 and 75 and are in a tie for 25th place and a tie for 39th place in the individual standings. Knight finished the afternoon with four birdies and nine holes of par while Rymer carded two birdies during his afternoon of play.
