Jan. 31, 2004

GAINESVILLE, Fla. –
Florida State senior Matt Adcock and freshman Bradley Ruch are tied for 16th in the individual standings and the Seminole men’s golf team is in seventh place in the team standings after the first two rounds of the 27th Annual Sun Trust Gator Invitational at the University Golf Course. With identical scores of 143, Adcock and Ruch are only six strokes behind Chris Cousins of Alabama Birmingham – the individual leader after the first 36 holes of play. The Seminoles are in contention for a top five team finish after totaling a 577 for the two rounds played Saturday and are within five strokes of four teams including third-place Kentucky who scored 572 for the two rounds.

University of Florida senior Camilo Villegas fired rounds of 70 and 69 to sit in third place at one-under as No. 1 Florida stands in first place by eight strokes. Cousins leads the field after shooting 67-70 = 137 at the par 70, 6,701-yard course. Louisiana State’s Garrett Prather is alone in second after rounds of 68 and 70 with Villegas rounding out the top three.

Adcock (Apopka, Fla.), Florida State’s No. 1 golfer, was very consistent on the day firing a 72 in the first round and a 71 in the second round for a 143 total. He was able to card a 143 total despite a triple bogey during the second round. Ruch (Louisville, Ken.) was just as consistent as he carded scores of 72 and 70 to finish the day at 143.

Sophomore Adam Wallace (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) begins play in round three in a tie for 27th place. After carding a 75 in the first round he finished strong and totaled an even-par 70 in round two. Junior Rusty Mosley (Vidalia, Ga.) is in a tie for 35th place with a 146 total while senior Tim Vickers (Alpharetta, Ga.) is in a tie for 74th place heading into the final 18 holes.

“The guys kept their heads and composure throughout the day,” said Head Coach Trey Jones. “They did not get discouraged during either round. I was happy with their play for the first day of the season.”

The event concludes with 18 holes beginning with a shotgun start at 8 p.m. Sunday. The Seminoles are looking to earn their first top-five team finish under Jones who is in his first season in Tallahassee after spending eight years at Georgia State University.
