BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Florida State men’s golf team, led by sophomore Matt Savage, is tied for third place in the team standings after the first two rounds of the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate at the Shoal Creek Golf Club. The Seminoles finished the first round in third place and held their position through the second round of the afternoon and trail first-place Alabama by 11 strokes and second place UCF by two strokes. Savage is tied for first in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 141.
Alabama shot identical rounds of 288 and holds the team leading entering Tuesday’s third and final round. The Crimson Tide leads UCF by nine strokes and is the highest ranking of the four SEC teams in the field. Florida State is the highest ranking of the three ACC teams in the 15-team field. The Seminoles are tied with Tennessee in the team standings. Savage is tied for first in the race for individual medalist honors with Gator Todd of Alabama. Jonas Blixt, a Florida State junior is tied for seventh with a two-round total of 144.
Savage (Louisville, Ky.) carded a three-under par 69 in round one and finished the afternoon with an even par score of 72 to finish with a 141 total. He was in third place (one stroke behind Blixt and Todd) after the first 18 holes and moved into a tie for the lead as he carded a 72 and Todd finished with a one-over par 73 in the afternoon round. Savage enters the final round looking to claim the first individual title of his collegiate career.
Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) shot a career-low tying 68 and was tied for first after the first round. He returned in the second round and shot a disappointing four-over par score of 76 for a two-round total of 144. He enters the final round looking for the third top-10 finish of his career. Blixt claimed medalist honors at the spring 2005 Gator Invitational.
Freshman Cameron Knight (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) played well in the second round as he carded a two-under par score of 70. He is tied for 31st in the individual standings with a two-round total of 150. Also competing for the Seminoles are Torstein Nevestad (Oslo, Norway) who finished the first two rounds with a 153 total and Tommy Rymer (Hastings, Minn.) who carded a total of 157.
