Florida State University freshman Nicholas Smith shot a three-under par 69 and is in second place in the individual standings and the Seminole men’s golf team is in third place in the team standings after the first round of the inaugural Linger Longer Invitational at the Reynolds Plantation Oconee Course. The Seminoles are playing in the two-round tournament as a final tune-up for their first appearance in eight years in the NCAA East Regional which begins Thursday in Orlando.
The Seminoles totaled a 290 team score and trail Georgia in the team standings by five strokes and North Carolina by four strokes. Brian Harman led three Bulldog teammates in to the top 10 of the individual standings with a two-under par 70. He is tied for third in the individual standings. Trevor Murphy of Charlotte is the individual leader after the first round with a four-under par score of 68.
Smith (Ocala, Fla.) led the Seminoles with a 69 in the first round – the second time this spring and the third time during his freshman season that he has broken 70. Smith enters the second and final round of the event on Monday only one stroke behind Murphy in the chase for the individual title. Smith has played strong golf in his last two tournaments and is averaging 72.75 strokes in his last four rounds. He is also looking to finish well and earn his bet career finish. He has previously earned two finished of tied for 11th during his freshman season.
Fellow freshman Matt Savage (Louisville, Ky.) shot a one-under par 71 in the first round and is in a tie for sixth place in the individual standings after the first 18 holes. He has now carded three sub-par rounds in his last two tournaments after leading the Seminoles with a tied for 12th place finish in the ACC Championship. Savage is averaging 70.75 strokes in his last four rounds.
Also helping the Seminoles into team championship contention are sophomores Jonas Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden), Song Jeon (Seoul, Korea) and junior Torstein Nevestad (Oslo, Norway) who fired scores of 75, 75 and 76 respectively.
The Seminoles will play in the final round of the Linger Longer Invitational Monday before leaving for Orlando Tuesday and their first NCAA East Regional since 1998.
