Seminole Men’s Golf Team Ranked Eighth Nationally

Sept. 19, 2007

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The Florida State men’s golf team is ranked eighth in this week’s Golf World/Nike Coaches’ Poll – a move into the national top 10 precipitated by its season-opening team championship at the Inverness Intercollegiate. The Seminoles began the fall season ranked 15th in Golf Week’s pre-season poll and earned the biggest jump of any team in the poll as they moved up seven spots to their current position.

The Seminoles are the highest ranked of the five ACC teams in the poll and are ranked ahead of four teams who finished in the top 10 of the team standings at the 2007 NCAA Championship.

“Rankings at this point in the season are generally nothing more than a combination of last years finish and this year’s start,” said Head Coach Trey Jones. “I am pleased that our guys are getting recognition for their hard work. Our goal is to stay process orientated and be prepared each week for a championship golf course against the top teams and players in the country.”

Florida State’s victory at the Inverness Intercollegiate was the ninth career victory for Jones as a head coach and his first as the head coach at Florida State. He led his Georgia State team to eight wins from 1996-2003.

Florida State won the Inverness Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Toledo with a tournament-record team low score of 862. The Seminoles finished ahead of six nationally ranked teams including Florida, Oklahoma State, Southern California, Louisville and Texas A&M. Florida State finished seven strokes ahead of the Gators (ranked fifth in this week’s Golf week poll), 22 strokes ahead of Oklahoma State (ranked seventh this week) and 24 strokes ahead of Southern California (ranked sixth this week). Senior All-American Jonas Blixt tied for first while junior All-American Matt Savage finished in a tie for fifth place in the individual standings.

Florida State will play in the PING/Golfweek Preview at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex on Sept. 22 and 23. One of the premier tournaments in college golf, this year’s Preview features five teams ranked in the top 10 of five of the top 10 and 14 of the top 30 team in the Golfweek preseason poll.
