Just one week after signing a letter of intent to play soccer at Florida State, Seminole signee Teresa Rivera was named Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Florida Friday. Rivera’s selection marks the third time in the past two seasons that head coach Patrick Baker has landed a Gatorade Player of the Year. All-ACC Rookie selection Camie Bybee won the award from the state of Oklahoma in 2001 and starting goalkeeper Kerry York took the same honors from the state of Maryland. Rivera is the fourth such honoree to commit to Florida State since Patrick Baker arrived at FSU in 1999.
“I am very excited for Teresa and she is most deserving of this award,” said Baker. “There are so many talented players in the state of Florida and for her to be selected as the best is a huge honor.”
Rivera, who plays at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in South Florida, scored 36 career goals and recorded 44 career assists despite playing at sweeper her junior and senior seasons. She is a four-year starter and senior captain and led her team to the Regional Championship as a senior and into the Regional semi-finals as a sophomore and junior. Rivera helped lead the Eagles to nine consecutive district and regional championships and was named 2001 Defensive MVP. She is a 1st-Team Miami Herald and Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel All-Broward County selection and she was named Rookie of the Year in 1998.
Rivera played with the Region III ODP team from 2000-2002, attended Region III Camp from 1998-2001 and played with the Florida State ODP team from 1998-2001. At the club level, Rivera has captained Team Boca for four years and won the Florida State Cup from 1998-2001. Team Boca has played in the Region III Tournament from 1999-2001 including the 2000 Regional semi-finals.
“Teresa is going to be very good college player,” said Baker. “She possesses skill, vision, composure and the competitive spirit to make an immediate impact on our program. She is one of a number of talented Florida players that will proudly wear the Garnet and Gold this fall.”
