First Pitch (What You Need To Know):
Two months after their original February 21 doubleheader was rained out, the Florida State softball team will travel to Troy for a 4 p.m. (CDT) doubleheader with the Trojans.
The Seminoles wrapped up ACC play over the weekend by taking two of three at North Carolina. By winning two of three Florida State locked up the number four seed for the upcoming ACC Tournament. FSU will play UNC in the opening round.
Senior shortstop Yuruby Alicart (Maracay, Venezuela) reset her single-season school record for home runs with a two-run homer in the seventh inning of Saturday’s doubleheader that tied the game at 2-2.
Wednesday’s doubleheader at Troy marks the return of the senior Brittany Krbec (Orlando, Fla.) who spent three seasons with the Trojans before transferring to FSU.
The Trojans have won three of the last four games against Florida State, including a sweep of the Seminoles in Troy during the 2005 season.
Freshman Monica Montez (Corona, Calif.) is the top hitter in the ACC during conference games with a .429 average.
Florida State is the only team to rank in the top three of hitting and pitching in both overall and conference-only games.
Junior pitcher Tiffany McDonald (Belfair, Wash.) has the second lowest ERA in the conference at 1.17 and has only given two earned runs in her last five appearances.
Florida State Heads Back To Troy To Make Up Doubleheader
Having wrapped up the Atlantic Coast Conference portion of its schedule after taking two of three at North Carolina last weekend, the Florida State softball team has a week of non-conference games before next week’s ACC Tournament. The Seminoles (38-20 overall) head back to Troy (38-15) to make a doubleheader that was originally scheduled for February 21, but was rained out. Game times have been moved back to 4 & 6 p.m. (CDT).
Trip To Troy Is A Homecoming For Krbec
The trip to Troy will have a little bit more meaning for one Seminole. For three years Brittany Krbec was a starter at Troy, but she transferred to Tallahassee for her final season. During her three seasons, Krbec had a .253 career average and started 177 of the 183 games. Last year she had her best season with the Trojans, hitting .284 with 21 RBIs and finished her tenure with a spot on the Sun Belt Championship All-Tournament Team. Krbec also excelled in the classroom as a member of the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine First-Team Academic All-District.
If there is one non-conference team that has given Florida State more fits over the last few years it’s been Troy. The Trojans have won three of the last four meetings between the two schools, including a sweep of the 2005 doubleheader at Troy. Overall, the Seminoles lead the all-time series 16-6-1, but only hold a 5-3-1 advantage in Troy. Last season Whitney Buckmon (Marietta, Ga.) singled in the bottom of the seventh inning to score LaShaun Davis with the winning run then Troy won the nightcap 4-2. This year, the Trojans have a victory over an ACC team with a 4-2 win against Georgia Tech.
Alicart Resets Her Own Home Record
When it comes time to break the Florida State single-season home run record, Yuruby Alicart has a flair for the dramatic. Last year she set the new Seminole standard at 12 by belting a solo home run that proved to be the game-winner in the championship game of the Athens Regional. On Saturday she reached a baker’s dozen by hitting a two-run shot in the seventh inning of game two to tie the game. In addition, it was the 25th of her career, tying her with Brandi Stuart for second in school history.
News And Notes…
Junior first baseman Brittany Osmon has hit as many home runs in the last two games (two) as she had during the rest of the season. During her career, Osmon is hitting .303 during the month of April with 18 runs scored, 21 RBIs and five home runs … Saturday was the eighth time this season that pitcher Tiffany McDonald gave up one earned run or less, but took the loss … Shortstop Yuruby Alicart has a nine-game hitting streak going into the Troy doubleheader … Florida State is 9-2 versus common opponents with Troy (Georgia Tech, Georgia State, Southern Miss, Radford, Florida A&M), while the Trojans are 7-2 … Whitney Buckmon picked up four hits last weekend, including her second triple of the year, to up her team-best average to . 355.
