Seminole Softball’s Buckmon Earns Prestigious Internship

TALLAHSSEE, Fla. – Senior Whitney Buckmon, starting centerfielder on the Seminole softball team, is one of seven ACC student-athletes selected to participate in the 2008 ACC Futures Internship Program. Buckmon, a sport management major who will graduate this spring, will begin a 10-month assistantship with the Orange Bowl Committee in Miami, Fla., in late summer.

The FedEx Orange Bowl is one of five entities that Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes have the opportunity to intern with. Each ACC member institution may nominate a maximum of three candidates according to specific criteria and instructions provided by the ACC Futures Internship Program.

This year, 26 nominees began the process with only 16 making the first cut. From there only seven were placed in one of the 10-month internships including Buckmon with the Orange Bowl Committee, one with the ACC Office, two with Sun Sports/FSN Florida in Orlando, two with Disney’s Wide World of Sports also in Orlando, Fla., and one with Sun Sports/FSN South & Sports South in Atlanta, Ga.

During her internship, Buckmon will be involved with various aspects of the FedEx Orange Bowl, MetroPCS Orange Bowl Basketball Classic, Bacardi Rhapsody in Orange as well as festival events and team site visits.

The Orange Bowl Committee is a not-for-profit, 315-member, all-volunteer organization that exists as a self-sustaining, independent organization supporting and producing activities and events which enhance the image, economy and culture of South Florida. Among the OBC’s core events are the Orange Bowl Festival, FedEx Orange Bowl and Blockbuster Total Access Orange Bowl Halftime Show, the MetroPCS Orange Bowl Basketball Classic, the WaMu Orange Bowl Fan Fest presented by the City of Miami, the Budweiser Orange Bowl Tailgate Party, Boston Market Orange Bowl Youth Football Championships, Orange Bowl Cheer & Dance Championships, Orange Bowl Swim Classic, Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships and Orange Bowl Sailing Regatta Series.*
