Seminole Swimming & Diving Get Ready For Season Openers Against FAU, Miami

Oct. 10, 2002

The Florida State University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will begin the 2002-03 season Friday afternoon in Boca Raton, Fla., when the Seminoles take on Florida Atlantic University at 4 p.m. On Saturday, the Seminoles will complete the road trip with a dual meet against rival Miami at 10 a.m. in Coral Gables, Fla. The 2002-03 season looks to be a promising one for both the men’s and women’s teams. The Lady Seminoles are coming off their best season in ACC history and the men return a key group of talented veterans to lead the way.

Last season the Seminoles took on FAU and Miami, and the men and women each picked up wins against the Owls and Hurricanes. The men are undefeated in 10 dual meets against FAU as are the women in 16 meets. Against the Hurricanes, the men hold a 28-15 advantage while the ladies are 14-11 all time.

What To Watch For:

– The FSU diving squad is emerging as one of the best in the nation. Miami has always been a dominate force in diving and Saturday’s meet will give the Seminoles a good indication on where they stand amongst the nation’s elite.

– The men’s senior freestyle sprinters will be a key to the Seminoles success this season. Nnamnse Ammons, Joey Marshburn and Matt Carmen will prove to be tough competition in the water this season and will team up to make one of the top sprint-free relay teams in the nation.

– The Lady Seminoles will be counting on Washington State transfers Andree-Anne LeRoy, Rachel Dong and Katie Byrnes to help alleviate the loss of NCAA qualifiers Christy Cech and Candice Nethercott to graduation.

– Freshmen Joel Roycik and Chris Vythoulkas will be given the opportunity to have a positive impact on the men’s squad this season. There performances will only help the Seminoles get better.

– The women’s diving team consists of All-ACC honorees, Chelsie Lerew, Tiffany Manning and Courtney McClow. Head diving coach Patrick Jeffery has one goal this season and that is to send all three to NCAA’s.
