Seminole Swimming Teams Go South To Compete

Oct. 5, 2000

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s and women’s swimming
and diving teams will begin competition with two road meets this weekend.
FSU will face Florida Atlantic on Friday, October 6th at 7 p.m. and then
face the Hurricanes of Miami on Saturday, October 7th at 9 a.m.

Second-year Head Coach Neil Harper returns 11 letterwinners on the
men’s team, that finished 7-4 last year, while 16 Lady Seminoles return
from last season’s 9-4 squad.

“We’re excited to get going,” Harper said. “We’ve had a good six
or seven weeks of solid preseason training and we’re tired of competing
against each other and ready to combine forces and go against someone
else.”

Last season, FSU hosted FAU in its last home meet of the season and
both squads defeated the Owls with the men winning by a score of 169-92 and
the women, 170-65. Florida State faced Miami in the first meet of the
season and defeated the Hurricanes, 153-84 (men) and 146-87 (women).

“We’ll face FAU Friday night and we expect that to be pretty
competitive,” Harper said. “They have improved a lot the past couple of
years, but we are looking for wins on both the men’s and women’s side. We
go south a little further and swim Miami Saturday morning at nine, before
the football game. It’s going to be a challenge to go on the road, in a
hostile environment, with a squad comprised of mostly freshmen and
sophomores, but we are going to go in as a unit and support one another and
try to get us a couple of wins.”

FSU’s next competition will be October 28th when the Seminoles host
North Florida (women) and Georgia Tech (Men).
