ROCHESTER, N.Y.- The Florida State men’s tennis team is proving to have a bright future with three Seminoles making a strong showing at the ATP Futures tennis tournament in Rochester, N.Y.
Junior’s Jean-Yves Aubone and Vahid Mirzadeh both advanced to the second round of the tournament with Aubone defeating the 397th ranked player in the world, Australia’s Nathan Healey. Aubone and Healey split the first two sets in tiebreakers 7-6(5) and 6-7(6). Aubone was able to pull the match out in the third set winning 6-2. He now plays Denis Kudla in the second round. Mirzadeh defeated Mohammed Salifu in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to set up a meeting with former Florida State player Ytai Abougzir who won in straight sets as well.
In doubles action, the team of Aubone and sophomore Clint Bowles defeated Diego Ayala and Andrew Colombo in straight sets 7-6(4), 7-5 to advance to the semifinals where they will face former Virginia duo Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey. Aubone and Bowles lost to the duo during the dual-match season when the Seminoles faced the Cavaliers.
