TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Beating the University of Virginia was something that eluded Florida State prior to this year. In the month of November, FSU beat the Cavaliers twice, with the most recent victory securing a spot for the Seminoles in the 2011 Women’s College Cup.
Florida State defeated Virginia 3-0 last Friday behind goals by Ines Jaurena, Dagny Brynjarsdottir and Tiffany McCarty. For their efforts, all three Seminoles were named to TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Team of the Week. The honor is the third for McCarty this year and the first for both Brynjarsdottir and Jaurena.
McCarty and Jaurena were also honored as Primetime Performers by CollegeSoccer360.com.
Jaurena broke the scoreless tie in the first half converting on a penalty kick opportunity in the 35th minute after McCarty was fouled from behind down near the end line. The junior defender was also part of the Seminole backline that kept the Cavaliers off the scoreboard en route to posting the team’s third shutout of the postseason.
The Seminoles added to their lead in the second half on Brynjarsdottir’s fifth goal of the season and second of the NCAA Tournament. Off a Florida State corner, the ball found its way to the body of Kassey Kallman, who settled it nicely right to the feet of Brynjarsdottir. The Icelandic native one-timed the shot inside the left post to give FSU a 2-0 lead.
McCarty sealed the victory in the 76th minute with her team leading 18th goal of the season to give the Seminoles a commanding 3-0 lead. The junior forward scored on a long break away dribbling a good distance before making a nice move to her right and drilling the ball inside the upper right corner of the net.
Florida State returns to the pitch on Friday, December 2 against Stanford in the national semifinals. The match will kick-off at 5:00 p.m., and will air live on ESPNU and ESPN3.com.
