Tallahassee, Fla – The Florida State volleyball split two matches against Florida Atlantic and No. 15 Kansas State on the first day of the 2003 season. FSU defeated Florida Atlantic 3-0 (30-21, 30-23, 30-21) in the first match of the day, but fell to No. 15 Kansas State 0-3 (19-30, 24-30, 20-30) in the evening match of the FSU Invitational.
Florida State ran out to an early 9-1 lead in game one against Florida Atlantic and never looked back as they swept the Owls 3-0 (30-21, 30-23, 30-21). Freshman Nikki Anthony scored the Seminoles first point of the season and the first of her career on a kill down the left-line. Aisha Carr (14) and Kristen Rust (15) combined for 29 kills in the win. Jennifer Anderson and Kammelah Omar each had 10 digs, while Anderson added 31 assists for the Seminole offense.
In game two, FSU doubled-up FAU 14-7 to break a 16-16 tie and went on to take the second game 30-23. Game three was tied at six early, but the Seminole offense rose to the occasionto complete the sweep by winning game three 30-21.
The second match of the day saw Florida State take on the nationally ranked Kansas State Wildcats. The Seminoles couldn’t turn the corner offensively as the Wildcats swept FSU 0-3 (19-30, 24-30, 20-30) in a tight match. Florida State’s best chance to even the series came in game two as they led 20-17. Kansas State’s defense at the net was too strong as the Seminoles fell 24-30 and 20-30 in games two and three.
Carr led the Seminole attack with nine kills, Omar bettered her mark from the first match of the day with 13 digs. Freshman setter Jessica Skower recorded 15 assists and Anderson added 20 more for a two-match total of 51 assists.
FSU will face Michigan at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 30, at Lucy McDaniel Arena in Tully Gymnasium to conclude the 2003 FSU Invitational. Florida Atlantic will take on Kansas State at 3:30 p.m. in the first match of the day.
