TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
Florida State (3-2, 0-0) will travel south this weekend to face Miami, Florida International and IUPUI at the Florida International Tournament in Miami, Fla. The Seminoles will face the Hurricanes in their opening match of the tournament Friday, September 13th, at 11:00 a.m. Florida State leads Miami in the all-time series, 12-8. The Seminoles will have a break before returning to action against Florida International at 7:00 p.m. Florida State leads the series with a record of 12-4 against the Golden Panthers. On Saturday, September 14th, the Seminoles will face the Jaguars of IUPUI at 5:00 p.m. This will mark the first meeting between the two schools.
In Florida State’s first match of the tournament, the Seminoles will look to hand Miami its first loss of the season. The Hurricanes enter the match with a record of 7-0, after winning four matches in the Wichita State Tournament and three in the Hurricane Invitational. Miami is led by senior outside hitter Marcela Gamarra. In the first seven matches of the season, Gamarra has recorded a hitting percentage of .296 and has averaged 4.21 kills per game. Sophomore Valeria Tipiana has also dominated this season hitting .354 and averaging 3.96 kills per game for the ‘Canes.
The Seminoles will return to Golden Panther Arena to face Florida International in the 7:00 p.m. match. After dropping the first three matches of the season, the Golden Panthers have rebounded to win three of their last four matches and improve to 3-4. Junior middle hitter Jennifer Owens has averaged 3.12 kills per game and boasts a hitting percentage of .325 to lead the FIU squad. Adriana Fundora has also performed well for the Golden Panthers as she has averaged 3.83 kills per game and 2.74 digs per game. Fundora leads her team in aces with 15 on the season, 0.65 per game.
In their final match of the tournament, the Seminoles will face IUPUI. The Jaguars enter the match with a record of 1-5. This will be the first meeting between the two schools. Leading the way for the Jaguars is junior outside hitter Rebekah Pallikan, averaging 4.40 kills per game, 2.05 digs per game and is hitting .338 on the season. Also playing at the outside position for the Jaguars, sophomore Michelle Sobocinski has averaged 2.86 kills per game, 0.24 aces per game and 1.95 digs per game.
The Seminoles will have five days off before returning to Tully Gymnasium on September 20th when they host Louisiana-Lafayette, LSU and Brown in the FSU Invitational. The Tournament will take place on Friday, September 20th and Saturday, September 21st. Florida State will face Louisiana-Lafayette in the first match of the tournament on Friday at noon.
