TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The Florida State women’s golf team, which played in the 2009 NCAA East Regional, begins its 2009-10 golf season as it plays at the Cougar Fall Classic Sept. 13-14 at Yeamans Hall Golf Club. The 18-team tournament will be played over two days with 36 holes scheduled for Sunday and 18 on Monday. The Seminoles won the 2006 Cougar Fall Classic for one of the 22 tournament victories during the illustrious career of Florida State head coach Debbie Dillman. The Seminoles will play four tournaments during the fall 2009 season and in at least six events during the spring 2009 season.
THE 2009 COUGAR CLASSIC FIELD
Florida State is joined by Charleston Southern, the College of Charleston, Furman, Georgia, Maryland, Miami, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, North Carolina, NC State, Richmond, South Florida, Tennessee, Texas, UNC Greensboro, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin in the 2009 Cougar Fall Classic. The event will be played on the Par 72, 6,211-yard Yeamans Hall Golf Club Course.
SEMINOLES FINISH FIFTH IN 2009 COUGAR CLASSIC
Senior All-American Caroline Westrup shot a six-under par 66 in the final round and earned her fifth career individual championship and led the Seminoles to a fifth place finish in the team standings at t he 2008 Cougar Classic. Westrup was three strokes behind the leader after two rounds and finished two strokes in front of the second place finisher, Whitney Neuhauser of Virginia, in the final standings. Westrup tied her career-low score of 66 as she carded six birdies and was never above par during the entire round. In fact she was never above par for the entire tournament as she shot scores of 69-71-66 to finish at a personal best 10-under par with a personal best 206 score for the 54-hole tournament. Westrup’s 206 in 54 holes was also a Cougar Classic record. Georgia, which was tied for the team lead after the first round and the team leader through the second and third rounds, won the team championship.
SEMINOLES ADD FORMER LPGA TOURING PRO MILLS TO STAFF
Leigh Ann Mills, a 10-year veteran of the LPGA Tour and a former Seminole team captain, is in her first season as an assistant women’s golf coach at Florida State University. Mills played in more than 200 career tournaments as an LPGA Touring Professional and enjoyed a successful career as a professional on the Futures, European and Asian Tours during her career. Mills was a four-year member of the Florida State women’s golf team from 1985-88 and helped the Seminoles to tremendous success. She earned 15 top-10 career individual finishes and helped the Seminoles to three team titles including Metro Conference Championships in both 1986 and 1988. Mills helped lead the Seminoles to more than 15 top-10 team finishes during her career. She graduated from Florida State in 1988 with a degree in risk management and insurance.
