Seminole Women’s Golf Team Finishes 11th At Auburn Tiger Derby

AUBURN, Ala. –
Sophomore Whitney Brummett finished in a tie for 24th place in the individual standings and the Florida State women’s golf team closed out their fall 2005 season with an 11th place finish in the team standings at the Auburn Tiger-Derby Invitational at the Auburn University Club. Brummett led the Seminoles in the final round as she carded a two-over par score of 74 and the Seminoles carded their best team round of the three-round event with a 298 as the team finished the fall season with their sights set on the upcoming spring season and their third trip in the last four years to the NCAA Tournament.

Auburn, ranked No. 7 in the nation, rallied from five strokes down entering the third round to defeat No. 1 ranked Duke by one stroke to win the team championship. Playing on their home course, the Tigers defeated the Blue Devils by six strokes (286-292) in the final round to win the championship. Maria Martinez of Auburn carded a four-under par 68 in the final round to win the individual title going away as she beat Nicole Smith of Tennessee by nine strokes. She finished the event with a seven-under par score of 209.

Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) played well in the first and third rounds with scores of 72 and 74 respectively as she earned the ninth top-25 individual finish of her career. She finished in the top 25 in three of the Seminoles’ four events during the fall season with her best finish of tied for 15th coming at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational in October. Brummett was the Seminoles’ top finisher in two of the team’s four events during the season.

Senior Caroline Larsson (Danderyd, Sweden) played her best golf of the tournament in the third round as she carded a two-over par 74 and finished with a 229 total for the 54-hole event. She improved consistently over the three rounds of this weekend’s tournament. After carding a 78 in the first round she carded a 77 in the second round and a 74 in the final round.

Junior Jaclyn Burch (Wildwood, Mo.) and freshman Lauren Cousart (Athens, Ga.) played their best golf of the tournament over the final 18 holes as both players carded three-over par scores of 75. Burch finished in a tie for 42nd place and Cousart in a tie for 73rd place.

Florida State opens its 2006 spring season at the Louisiana State/Cleveland Golf Classic in Baton Rouge, La., March 3-5.
