Seminole Women’s Golf Team In Eighth At Liz Murphey Classic

April 12, 2005

ATHENS, Ga. –
The Florida State women’s golf team is in eighth place in the team standings after the first round of the prestigious Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia Golf Course. The Seminoles are led by junior Caroline Larsson who shot a season-best 18-hole score of 73; she is in a tie for fourth place in the individual standings.

Georgia, the host team, shot 10 over par to lead the field of 18 teams with a 298. The Bulldogs are ahead of LSU (300), Tulane (301) and Wake Forest (301) after one round of play. Bulldog junior Lisa Tyler shot par for day with a 72 to lead Georgia and match Ashley Hoagland of Wake Forest and Stacy Lewis of Arkansas for low round honors. The trio is tied for the lead heading into Saturday’s second round.

Larsson (Danderyd, Sweden) played her best round of golf this season as she shot a 37 on the front nine and a 36 on the back nine. She finished one stroke over par and is only one stroke behind the trio of leaders. Larsson’s previous best single-round score this season was a 77 during the second round of the season-opening Lady Gator Invitational. She begins play looking for the third top 10 finish of her career.

Junior Jaclyn Burch (Wildwood, Mo.) finds herself in the top 25 of the individual standings for the second consecutive week after carding a four-over par score of 76. Burch, a sophomore, finished in 15th place at the Lady Gamecock Classic earlier this month. She has carded four of her seven scores at 76 or better during the first three events of the spring season.

Freshman Whitney Brummett (Eureka, Mo.), the Seminoles’ leading golfer this spring, is in a tie for 51st place in the individual standings after shooting an uncharacteristically high score of 79. Her seven over par score over the first 18 holes marks only the fourth time she has failed to score 78 or better during the first three events of the spring season. Freshman Whitney Wright (Rockingham, N.C.) and Kristin Sordel (Windermere, Fla.) are also competing for the Seminoles in the event.

The 18-team field returns to action Saturday with tee times beginning at 9 a.m. The Seminoles are paired with Ohio State and Mississippi State.
