Oct. 7, 2003

LAS CURCES, N.M. –
The Florida State University women’s golf team is in fifth place in the team standings and Seminole seniors Alison Curdt and Carrie Sordel are tied for ninth in the individual standings following completion of the second round of Price’s Give ‘Em Five Intercollegiate at the New Mexico State University Golf Course.

The Seminoles, ranked 18th in the nation by GolfWeek Magazine, begin play in Wednesday’s third round only seven strokes behind Oklahoma, the current team leader. In addition, Florida State is within three strokes of the second place team, Louisiana State, and only one stroke behind Baylor and Texas Tech who are both tied for third place. Curdt and Sordel and also within striking distance of the current individual leaders. The Seminole pair is only four strokes behind the current co-leaders – Christine Boucher of Kansas State and Kim Kolb of Texas Tech – who have carded identical two-round scores of 146.

Both Curdt (St. Louis, Mo.) and Sordel (Windermere, Fla.) battled the elements in Tuesday’s second round. Neither player could solve the rain and crosswinds on the front nine as they fell behind early and couldn’t match their scores from the first round. Curdt carded a second-round 80 (after a first round and tournament-leading 70) while Sordel scored a 77 (after a first round 73). Both golfers are tied for ninth with two-day totals of 150.

Florida State senior Katie Quinney (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) also had a tough time with the weather conditions as she finished with a second round score of 78 and is in a tie for 18th place entering the third round. Sophomore Caroline Larsson (Danderyd, Sweden) is tied for 25th place with a two round total of 153 and freshman Jaclyn Burch (Wildwood, Mo.) is tied for 48th with a 36-hole total of 159.

No. 7 Oklahoma is the leader beginning third round play Wednesday. The Sooners have a four stoke lead over Louisiana State, a six stoke lead over Baylor and Texas Tech and a seven stroke lead over the Seminoles. The third and final round of the event begins Wednesday morning with a shotgun start.
