Seminole Women’s Golf Team In First Place At LSU Classic

March 15, 2008

BATON ROUGE, La. –
The Florida State University women’s golf team maintained its first place position in the team standings and junior All-American Caroline Westrup moved into a tie for first place in the individual standings as second round play in the LSU/Cleveland Women’s Golf Classic at the University Club came to a close. The Seminoles have a 14 stroke lead in the team standings while Westrup is tied with Lauren Doughtie of NC State for the lead in the individual standings entering Sunday’s final round.

The Seminoles shot a 293 team score in the second round – their third best single round team score of the year – and the best team score of the second round to maintain their first place standing which they earned during the first round. The Seminoles shot an identical team score of 293 in the first round to take the lead after the first 18 holes. Florida State is 14 strokes ahead of Alabama and 15 strokes ahead of both Louisiana State and Wake Forest.

“I am extremely proud of the way our players are performing this weekend,” said Head Coach Debbie Dillman. “The wind started to kick on the front nine today and instead of losing themselves in their bad luck they were able to keep their wits about them and stuck to the game plan. I like how we are playing right now. We came here and that’s what we intend to do.”

Westrup (Ahus, Sweden) moved into a first place tie in the individual standings as she carded a four-under par score of 68 in the second round. She improved her score steadily throughout the second round with two birdies on her first two holes and an eagle and two more birdies on her back nine to close the afternoon at four under. Westrup improved her score by five strokes after shooting a 73 in the first round of the event.

Westrup begins play in Sunday’s final round looking for the fourth individual championship of her career and her first since winning the Florida State hosted Chrysler Challenge during the spring of 2007.

Senior Whitney Wright (Rockingham, N.C.) continued her stellar play and is in fifth place in the individual standings. She carded a season-best two under par 70 in the first round and has a two-round total of 145. Wright’s 36-hole total of 145 is the best of her career.

Freshman Macarena Silva (Santiago, Chile) is in a tie for 17th place while senior Whitney Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) is in a tie for 28th place in the individual standings. Silva carded a one-over par 73 in the first round while Brummett carded a one-over par 73 in the second round.
