Seminole Women’s Golf Team Travels To Play In Tar Heel Invitational

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The Florida State women’s golf team faces a strong early season challenge as it travels to play in the 2005 Lady Tar Heel Invitational at the University of North Carolina Oct. 7-9. 2005. The 18-team event is a 54-hole event played over three days at the Finley Golf Course at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Seminoles are playing in their second event of the fall season after competing at the Cougar Fall Classic in September.

THE 2005 TAR HEEL INVITATIONAL FIELD
Florida State is joined by No. 13 Auburn, No. 1 Duke, Kentucky, No. 30 Louisiana State, North Carolina A, North Carolina B, No. 29 NC State, No. 14 Ohio State, Oklahoma State, South Carolina, No. 6 Tennessee, Texas, No. 12 Texas A&M, Tulsa, No. 15 Vanderbilt, No. 20 Virginia and No. 26 Wake Forest in the 2005 Lady Tar Heel Invitational. The event will be played on the Par 72, 6,285 yard Finley Golf Course on the campus of the University of North Carolina. Duke is the defending team champion and Maria Martinez of Auburn is the defending individual champion. Both the Blue Devils and Martinez will look to defend their titles during the 2005 event.

BURCH AND SEMINOLES FINISH WELL AT COUGAR FALL CLASSIC
Junior Jaclyn Burch (Wildwood, Mo.) shot a one-over par 73 in the final round and finished in a tie for 30th place in the individual standings to lead the Florida State women’s golf team to a 14th place finish in the team standings at the third annual Cougar Fall Classic at Yeamans Hall Country Club. Burch shot a one-over par total of 145 in the final two rounds and finished only six strokes from earning the second top-10 individual finish of her Seminole career. Burch led the Seminoles with a nine-over par total of 225 for the three-round event. After carding an 80 in the first round, she settled in and carded an even-par 72 in the second round and finished play with a one-over par 73. With all of her scores counting towards the team total in the event, it marked the 49th consecutive round in 17 consecutive tournaments that she has counted her scores toward the team score. Tennessee carded a final round team score of 289 and held off second place Georgia en route the team championship.

SEMINOLE B-TEAM WINS BUBBA WATSON INVITATIONAL
Florida State’s B-team won the championship at the Bubba Watson Invitational on Sept. 26-27 as the Seminoles put up a team score of 619 in the two-round event held at the Stonebrook Golf Club in Pace, Fla. Seminole junior Kayla Shaul (Cumming, Ga.) won the individual title with back-to-back 73s, edging out Paige Haverty of Catawba College by two strokes. Florida State won the team total as it defeated West Florida, the host school, by seven strokes. The Seminoles carded the best team total of the event with a 308 in Monday’s first round and closed the event with a 311 in the second round. The Seminoles’ seven-stroke margin of victory in the first round helped them to the win as they finished tied with West Florida’s 311 score in the second round. Shaul was the only player to finish both rounds under par on the par 74 course, accounting for two of the six rounds in the tournament that were finished at or under par.

SHAUL MAKES FIRST APPEAERANCE IN SEMINOLES’ VARSITY LINEUP
Seminole junior Kayla Shaul will join senior Caroline Larsson, junior Jaclyn Burch and sophomores Whitney Brummett and Whitney Wright in Florida State’s starting lineup at the 2005 Tar Heel Invitational. Shaul is the only new addition to the Seminoles’ lineup which has remained constant in each of the last 10 events (fall 2004, spring 2005 and fall 2005). The lineup has included Larsson, Burch, Brummett and Wright since the first event of the fall 2004 season. Shaul played at Daytona Beach Community College in 2004 and 2005 where she won the junior college national championship as a freshman. Larsson has played in 32 consecutive events for the Seminoles – every tournament for the team since her arrival as a freshman.
