HANAHAN, S.C. –
The Florida State women’s golf team opened the 2006-07 campaign in stellar fashion as it claimed the team championship of the Cougar Fall Classic hosted by the College of Charleston at Yeamans Hall Golf Club. Leading the way for the Seminoles were sophomore Caroline Westrup, who finished in second in the individual standings, and junior Whitney Brummett, who finished third in the individual standings.
Florida State made up eight strokes on North Carolina and rallied from a tied for fifth team position after the first two rounds to pass Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana State and North Carolina to win the championship. The Seminoles defeated North Carolina by one stroke to claim the win in their first event of the fall season. It marks the fourth year in the last five years that Florida State has won at least one event.
Westrup (Ahus, Sweden), who earned All-America First-Team honors in 2006, shot a career-low and tournament record 66 in the third round to finish second in the individual standings. She finished with a minus-four total of 212 – the best three round score vs. par and the best gross score of her Seminole career. Westrup has now earned eight top four finishes in eight career starts including four finishes of second or better. She played 16 of her 18 holes at par or better with eight holes being scored with birdies. She lost to Lauren Hunt of North Carolina by two strokes.
Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) played the best event of her career and finished in third place – only one stroke behind Westrup and three strokes behind Hunt. Brummett established her career best scoring rounds on the first days of the event as she carded identical scores of 70 in rounds one and two. She finished with career best scores for a single round (70), three-round tournament (213), three-round score vs. par (-3) and tied her personal best with her third place finish.
Sophomore Lauren Cousart (Athens, Ga.) finished tied for 29th as she played the best tournament of her Seminole career. She shot a career-low 73 in the second and third rounds, finished with a career-low 224 score for the three-round event and finished in a career-best tied for 29th place in the individual standings. Cousart shaved 18 strokes off of her previous career-low tournament score of 242 at the fall 2005 Florida State hosted Chrysler Challenge.
Senior Jaclyn Burch (Wildwood, Mo.) finished tied for 39th and sophomore Erica Gonzalez (Davie, Fla.) finished tied for 53rd in the individual standings. Burch shot a tournament-low 73 in the third and final round while Gonzalez performed well in her second event as a member of the Seminoles’ starting line-up.
